Best Backpack for Flying
Recently we were asked what the best carry-on backpack for flying and travelling was. Without a doubt I have one pack I always reach for, unless it's only an overnight.
This recommendation is a bit unusual, which is what makes it so brilliant. As Founder & CEO of GURU Adventure Travel, I've used this pack on over 80 flights & it's never let me down. I personally own 12 backpacks right now, each with a specific use, but this is always the one I reach for when flying or travelling more than 1 day without a car.
The brilliance is in its simplicity = low weight (just 2 lbs). 1 large main storage area, 1 small front zippered pocket, 1 medium internal zippered pocket, 2 external side elastic mesh bottle pockets, that's it. Padded vented back & shoulder straps. External cross front straps to carry shoes, helmet, jacket, skateboard, snowboard, etc., side compression straps.
At 22x13x9 it's very unassuming, but because it's box shaped and soft, the 42L of volume can quickly become 60L without much effort or notice. The bag is black so it appears smaller than it is, so TSA & airport personnel don't give it a second glance regarding carry-on size restrictions & regulations.
I regularly travel for over a week with just this bag, with weights over 40 lbs, and always use the overhead. Unless I'm bringing sports equipment, I don't ever check a bag anymore. I’ve had my airline approved overhead roller bag bounced multiple times at the gate, but I’ve never had this bag questioned, and it fits much more! I'd guess this bag has saved me about $2,000 in checked bag fees over the last 4 years.
I'm using the bag from the 12m T5 kite, but it appears the Lifetime Backpack on their site is the same size and build.
Bonus, it's a kiteboarding bag, and says Life is Better When You're Kiteboarding on the side, so it always strikes up conversation with other travelers.
One caveat, once it gets heavy, it's not for everyone. Those averse to a mild workout from point A to B, or with a long walk may want an option with wheels.
I hate to give my secret away, but it's so good! Cheers!
Adventure Well.
